Business as a Subject
Business in general terms can be defined as an activity that makes an individual busy, takes up time, capital and effort and is done by a person as service, duty, out of interest or for the advantage of self in the form of occupation. If we consider the most preferred meaning, it refers to an organization that provides goods and services to those that require them, or the consumers. Most business entities are driven by the main objective of making a profit but the decision primarily depends on the organization to choose the things of importance, which can, for example be the values and moral principles.
The activity of providing goods and services involves financial, industrial and commercial aspects in itself. These include employing a large number of people in business related activities to generate a lot of employment opportunities and improve a nation’s economy. It also includes the principal activity in the lives of most people as they strive to earn money and bear responsibilities in their lives. The business studies is an interesting field of study which is used to mean managing the individuals efficiently to work towards reaching a particular set of goals, which, in most cases, as stated above, is growth and the generation of profit.
If we observe closely around us, we can see that businesses can be found everywhere and can be identified as units that perform the economic activities and other special functions they have been designed to perform. Business entities can be classified according to their different forms, some of them being manufacturing, agriculture, services, retail business, real estate and transportation. Further, the enterprises can be privately owned or public, which makes the regulation approach different. This should be carefully decided based on the impact of the business on the society.
Related concepts of a business are ethics and values, legal regulations and implications, business intelligence, use of various strategies to improve business, and many other management concepts that find their use in successfully establishing and running a business. Aligning the actions to the ethics is very important, the different legalities of the environment one is operating in should be considered. Business intelligence has gained importance in these times with the increased use of technology in assisting in better decision making and forecasting. And strategies are definitely needed to improve the business performance.
